Great short on Integrity by Darren Hardy

Where have you sacrificed your integrity to get along with others?
To be accepted, not rock the boat, to conform, etc.?

Think about it, even in the last week…
When was someone gossiping about someone else and you either joined them or said nothing to stop it?

When did you agree to a meeting, a lunch or a knock at the door at the sacrifice of your own priorities and the goals you have to provide for your family?

When did you watch something, listen to something, read something, eat something or drink something, to your detriment, because everyone else was?

When did you lie and sacrifice your integrity yourself?
Did you miss the workout you promised to do, the call you promised to make, the eating discipline you promised to have, the affection you promised to give or the time you promised to be home?

Action for today:
Apologize and forgive yourself for your past transgressions.
But, no more.
Starting today, DO NOT SACRIFICE your integrity, most especially to yourself.

Khan Dynasty brief..

After watching this short series on Netflix called Marco Polo it opened my mind to why we often become driven to conquer and control so much around us in the name of "goals" or "ambition".
This time was really an amazing part of history that I knew very little about, which caused me to read about it further after being exposed to it.

Are you aware that Ghenghis Khan established a dynasty that became the largest contiguous land mass ever controlled by one governing authority or individual?

Originating in the steppes of Central Asia, the Mongol Empire eventually stretched from Central Europe to the Sea of Japan, extending northwards into Siberia, eastwards and southwards into the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, and the Iranian plateau, and westwards as far as the Levant and Arabia.

The amount of effort and tactics used to create such an empire amazed me to ponder not only how but even more, Why? It was such a large amount of territory to govern by one singular authority that the brutal means they often resorted to create fear and keep all in line seemed a bit overwhelming.

It made me think about how often we get off track in search of accomplishing so much and in turn lose site of remaining correct in the process. Goals, aspirations and accomplishment are not wrong, in fact they can be great proof of a job well done but the way we go about creating our LIFE impact is the real level of success we are all searching for.

It was surprising to see some of the tactics resorted to inside of this mini series to establish fear in the subjects of all the lands. There was a regular practice of crucifying the people of a village and leaving them hanging to send a message to all travelers that they were entering the Khan Dynasty. The "silk road" was established as a trade route between Venice and China that gave the Khans control of all silk in the world among many other precious goods and all travelers were required to pay large homage for entering the region. This created incredible wealth and expansion to each of the Khans for almost 200 years. If you are a student of world history this is not the only example of an individual or small group of individuals attempting to manage so much and resorting to poor tactics to maintain their vision for their country or region.

It seems outrageous to discuss today but the truth is that we all get lost in this same scenario from time to time where our focus on our task often overtakes our desire to care for the relationships we have been given. If you enjoy history and new angles on history this mini series might be worth a watch but even more that that I think understanding our truest "values" and what we do to reach them is a great thought to ponder today.

I will write more on "Values" in the near future and how they drive our ethics, morals and actions and therefore are truly deserving of our attention as we go about developing them. Whatever your values are today, know them and know how they cause each of your actions to create what you are after today.

More to come on this subject and I hope your values are clear and serving you to become your best as well as serving all of those you care about in your life today!

Great Video on Zappos Culture of team

This was a short 20/20 video on the culture of Zappos and the commitment one man (Tony Hsieh) had to building a fun environment at any cost which paid off pretty well. If you can carve out 7 minutes to watch as a team and then think about what would make your culture more fun and be attractive to others.

Thats Entertainment!

This past Sunday was full of Entertainment and Thought! Entertainment and completely Entertaining as well. I was planning on going to see the new movie “American Sniper” as I had heard the ratings were great and it would be a cool afternoon choice for a slow Sunday. I had a relaxed start to the day and worked out before getting ready to go and then looked up movie times that were available.

After checking “fandango” I realized that I had a few hours before the movie was going to be playing so I decided to watch a documentary on apple TV at home before leaving. I often check out new documentaries to look for a way to relax watching tv and grow my thoughts at the same time ( better than law and order ;-0). The one I chose Sunday created some really enjoyable thought processes about the ability to live on one dollar a day.  In fact the actual title of the film was “Living on One Dollar”. It was a film created by two guys who were sophomores in college and economic majors. In studying the worlds economy they were both bewildered to realize that a large portion of the planets population lived on one dollar a day. In fact over 1/ 7th of people living on this planet, that is over 1 billion, live on this amount of money or less.

This was intriguing to me on several levels; travel, different cultures, personal perspective on money, willingness to recognize the fate of others, just to name a few!

My own perspective on money, I was just sharing with a friend recently, I have been very fortunate in both opportunities and in ability to create my own comfort from those opportunities. It still amazes me that no matter how much comfort we may have or create for ourselves we often still see whats missing. In my last blog post I advocated for everyone to build their goals from their appreciations but it is the battle with “whats missing" that we must often overcome. I would say that this is probably what interested me in the title of this film to begin with. As I often look around at my home, my cars, my investments it is often a challenge to remember what I do have instead of slipping into “what I don’t have". The biggest conflict I have found with a negative focus (glass is half full) is that it prevents me from being free enough to make the next “Best” choice. Every day in life we are presented with opportunities to build our values and ethics and our decisions are often based upon what we think will be best for each of us personally.

What do I think I should be doing with my life?

What choices will help me reach my goals faster?

What direction is the best one for my needs?

I think it depends upon your chosen goals, needs and values. If I have found my mind often slipping to whats missing then I find my values being focused in that same negative direction which influences my ethics/values of choice. For example NEED creates a chosen plan to correct your needs. The decisions to get to that chosen destination which fulfills need may sometimes go against your internal compass and then we get exhausted from our “CHOSEN” conflict. If I truly understand what I appreciate in my life then I can choose goals based upon my chosen values and from those thoughts the goals I work toward bring more energy in order to complete them.

Real life example; I work in healthcare and a friend of mine, who is a very successful Doctor of Chiropractic, recently told me he has only ever met two types of Doctors. Those who make their decisions for goals based upon giving greater care to their patients which they get paid for and those who make their decisions on how to get paid based on giving care to their patients. Every person must make their choices on their values but often choosing the result of the work as the focus on money will be a great source of conflict. We all need cash-flow to live and give to those we care for but to focus our energy on the cash first will likely always allow our minds to see whats missing as opposed to what exists.

If 2+2 = 4…

Then our desire to see the sum of the equation (4) become larger is simply based upon changing the equation. Money is now and has always been the sum of the equation and it is what we do with our energy and life that creates it. My goal is to understand my values in such way that I set goals around them and build an income attached to what I truly love doing.

The impressive things I found in this movie were many but one of them was how I awesome I felt for sophomores in college who were chasing their interest freely and taking this chance!

So back to the story line of “Living on one Dollar”…..

These two young sophomores decide to cruise to Guatemala and bring along two of their buddies to film a documentary on people living in poverty. The two originators, Zach and Chris, both spoke spanish which was close to the dialect of the local community they were in. The two other guys ran the cameras and helped in the creation of the documentary. One of the things they realized after they landed in this remote village was that many of the people who live there were day laborers and not always sure of their daily incomes to provide for themselves. The students decide to live as close to the reality of the local community as possible. They found shelter that was a very impoverished house and they decided to only bring enough money with them to live on one dollar per person for each day.

They were doing this film during their summer break and had made arrangements to live in the village for 2 months. Since there were four of them for about 60 days, they brought approximately $240 in total. They then wrote out numbers to represent dollars indicating zero through nine on little pieces of paper and put them all in a hat. At the beginning of each day they would pull out a number and whatever number they pulled it would represent the amount of money they had to live on for that day. It was very similar to the way the people of the local community had to live, not knowing whether they would be able to work and make money on a specific day or just have to go without. There were some days where they felt that they were almost living as royalty when they pulled out a nine but there were many day’s when they pulled out a zero or a one and they were not sure how to get by on such  small amount for all four people.

They eventually learned that they could buy enough rice and beans to create about 3200 calories in food that the four of them would be able to share each day. Imagine sophomores in college approximately 20 years old each surviving on about 800 cal per person. It was not long until one of them was very sick and had been infected with some parasites from the poor nutrition. He went to the local doctor and found out that he needed to take some drugs to kill the parasites but the cost of those drugs was about $25 which he did not have in their budget. In preparation for the trip they had created a safety kit which included some antibiotics in case they got into just this situation but the realization of what people have to do when faced with these types of choices was a huge impact on all four of the boys.

One of the things they soon learned from the local villagers was that in order to increase their income they needed to grow something they could “trade” with others in the community. They started growing a crop of radishes that when the crop came in would be an additional source of economic buying power. They also soon learned that they needed to create refried beans by buying lard and frying their meals each day. This additional source of fat, which cost only 30cents, was enough to almost double their caloric intake per day. As the film went on in each situation it created great compassion inside each of the boys documenting and in me as a member of the audience also.

I found it amazing to watch the way that the people of the village supported each other and worked together as one group to overcome the obstacles they found in their daily lives. I thought it was eye-opening to see the way that each member of the village worked to help the other members reach their personal respective goals and take care of their individual needs by sharing.

I wondered what their goal list would look like if they were building it right now? I guess my take away from watching this film was to understand how much I have been given and how often I become insulated from the real challenges that exist. I have a friend who is currently on a mission trip in Africa where he is faced with some of these same thoughts in what he is experiencing. Building my own goals and using my talents to make change in my life depends first on what I value and how I respect those values within my choices.

These boys chose to spend their summer break searching out something that was valued within them. They did not go spend the summer at the lake, partying etc.. but instead decided to be “abnormal” and chase a value they saw and recognized. At that age in life to have this type of experience makes me excited for them! Where do they get to go with starting their impact from being free to value others and valuing their ability to help make change with what they see. Economics majors? I would say they have made great choices to become majors in life and a brighter future as a result. I am not sure where they will end up but I read up on them after the film and saw that they have now traveled the world showing their independent film and bringing awareness to the rural life in Gautemala. Their life’s choices are being based upon their values to give and create and their second film is coming out soon about a refugee camp in Afghanistan. I am certain that the sum of their equation in life will be just fine because they focused on the right things first. Valuing their internal compass.

I encourage you to take a few moments and Google this film, sit down and watch it for an hour and expand your own awareness. Choosing our values, choosing how to use our lives and learning to become what we are destined to become is based upon each of us as individuals and not a picture of “success” sold by someone else. I will not say there is a right or wrong in anyone else’s choices I just know there is right and wrong inside my own choices. I think we are all smart enough if we are trying to learn and listen to recognize the voice inside of us that helps decide our values and appreciations.

Cool film that created some cool thoughts that made me a little more conscious today. I hope that me taking a few minutes to share it does the same for you. Know your values, choose your direction and create your impact from appreciation. The sum of the equation will take care of itself if you do those three things well!

My American Sniper thoughts on a different day but great reflection on living life as well.

Enjoy the Search,

Focus on First?

At this point in life I now spend a lot of time thinking at the end of each year about things I have accomplished and future direction. The more I go through this process the better I am getting at understanding the power of planning and thinking. I recently looked through all of the results from 2014 and something has changed in my process over the past few years in reflecting that I wanted to share with you. I have always been fortunate in life at clearly seeing the things, I wanted to change, that were not the full results of what I had wanted or desired for my years efforts. I think that expecting results from your effort is a critical part of growing but now I am learning to also see the other side of planning correctly. I have been working hard on changing the process in order to examine what I am appreciative of FIRST. Not Second but FIRST.

I honestly believe in that which we focus our minds upon grows the most and while I know we all have talents to overcome the issues we find ourselves in all year long  why not place First things First?

If I am desiring a positive reward, positive outcomes and situations in my life, then isn’t it up to me to focus on those positive items I had in 2014 First? I am not wanting to sound Pollyannish so I want to also examine the negative things I wish to change from 2014 but never at a cost which forsakes the gifts I received this year First. I know that the mistake of Focus can be the greatest mistake of all in life and I want to celebrate each month of the year by reading my calendar and remembering where I was and what I did. I am currently going through that process for each and every month and making a list of appreciations.  Imagine spending a few hours alone and just taking the time to realize all that you did in this year of your life…

What would you see from this same type of examination?

What would you learn?

As I go through these past months, weeks and days I am learning what an awesome year this has been and if you are reading this I probably shared some of it with you, so thank you! This year has held so many great opportunities to learn more about myself, my priorities and my commitments. I am trying to use that information to become “better than I was yesterday” because I know that is my main responsibility in life.

In order to maximize this time of year I want to go through all I experienced BUT my habit for most of my life in doing this exercise is to find the things I want to fix and create a list of goals I want to accomplish in the upcoming year. This process sounds pretty good on the surface but I now realize it is one of my main problems! If I do this task and do not remember to place the gratitudes first then that means I am focusing on what I did not like. By placing my focus on those items and making a list for the new year I now realize I have always been basing my goals for improvement upon my view of whats missing!

Napolean Hill taught us the principle of “what the mind can conceive and believe the will can achieve” He was right! The question we must ask ourselves is when we examine the power of the mind, what is our mind focused upon? It seems like  a small challenge but I realize every year it is anything but SMALL! It is the largest part of building me. Knowing what I like and I don’t like in my life are both important but which comes first?

You have heard of the proverbial question “Which comes first the chicken or the Egg?” That is a confusing question but has nothing to do with our focus on goals. When focusing on changing your life there is a  VERY clear order to which comes first. It is always what you appreciate FIRST. If you examine human kind you will find that the majority of the population has way less than the minority of our population who possess way more. I think this obvious as we study the numbers of world wide wealth and ownership.

Is it true that 1 percent of Americans control a third of the wealth?

Yes it is TRUE, in fact according to Huffington Post and Reuters….

Oct 9 (Reuters) - Global wealth has risen by 68 percent over the past 10 years to reach a new all-time high of $241 trillion and the United States accounts for nearly three quarters of the increase, Credit Suisse said in its World Wealth Report. Average global wealth has hit a peak of $51,600 per adult but this is spread very unevenly, with the richest 10 percent owning 86 percent of the wealth, analysts at the Credit Suisse Research Institute said. The top 1 percent alone own 46 percent of all global assets!

Why? Is it because we live in an unfair world?

I personally do not think so. Yes it is true that some people are born with more advantages than others but it is also true that generational wealth is not a step up for very long if at all. When you talk to many people about this subject you will commonly hear their envy of “if only I had that opportunity” or “if only I was born with that much of a head start.”

There was an article in FORBES I recently read in which the headline read…
”How The Wealthiest Families Make And Lose Their Money”

I love reading history and I love reading about the people who have created incredible impact in business and in life. It is all too common that the people who created wealth often leave a legacy of wealth to their children but it is very rare according to history that the wealth is maintained by the generations it is left too in the future.

John D. Rockefeller left a fortune to his descendants that was the largest fortune ever accumulated, by the time Rockefeller died in 1937, his assets equaled 1.5% of America’s total economic output. To control an equivalent share today would require a net worth of about $340 billion dollars, more than four times that of Bill Gates, currently the world’s richest man.

Rockefeller’s Family – lives on, spanning more than 200 surviving individuals and possessing a collective net worth of about $10 billion, as compared to the $340 billion equivalent they were left, despite the family’s continued wealth, which rests primarily within a small percentage of the family, the Rockefeller’s no longer stand atop America’s financial hierarchy of wealth a far cry from the heyday of John D. Rockefeller less than 90 years ago.

What makes the difference?

The Rockefeller legacy began with a 16-year-old bookkeeper in Cleveland, Ohio, whose greatest ambitions were to earn $100,000 and live 100 years. His formal business training included a ten-week class in accounting, as well as a con-artist father who was known to say, “I cheat my boys every chance I get. I want to make ‘em sharp,” according to the biography John D. Rockefeller: Anointed with Oil.

That young man named John Davison Rockefeller in 1855, who in 25 years would become the wealthiest man of his time, and arguably the wealthiest in history, reigning over a monopoly that refined as much as 90 percent of America’s oil. (cited from Carl O’Donnell Forbes magazine)

JD Rockefeller built a fortune that was diminished by his children and their descendants but this is only ONE example of the same story over and over again, the Roosevelt’s, the Dupont’s, the Vanderbilt’s, the Carnegie’s are but a few more names from history that can show the same type of examples of generational wealth and not propelling their children forward with advantages beyond their own abilities.

It is awesome to think that our future is unlimited but when we fall into the space of thinking that some have greater opportunity than others it becomes dangerous. I would argue that in this country while the odds might be helpful for some with a greater starting point it has been proven over and over that it is up to each of us to determine our futures. Our futures are much more dependent on self focus and disciplines than what we have been handed from others before us.

The opposite has also been shown to be true, more often than not, many people who are handed great wealth and opportunity are in no way assured of a better outcome for their lives or a continuation of “easy street”.

Doesn’t this all depend upon the individual and the way they choose to see the world?

At this point of the year, I do not want to spend any time wishing for what could have been or envious of what others may have because it just creates me falling further from my goals. Instead I choose to see this year and what it held so that I may create a template for where I want to go next year. No year is safe and I will never be locked into anything except what I find to be right for the coming year and it’s creation of my life. I have been fortunate enough since being a child to recognize the power I hold to change anything I want but I am learning how to now divide those perceptions into two categories.

As I study each moment of 2014 there are clearly many great things and also some things I would like to change going forward but I am learning to be thankful for the great ones FIRST. Learning gratitude, appreciation and reflection for what I have been given in my life always comes First. Secondly I have the ability to see the things I wish to improve upon and both need to be planned for accordingly. I never knew the order was so important and that has often caused me to take for granted the things I have had while in search of the things I wanted to accomplish. I am working on myself to change these reflections and their order of importance even as I write this article.

We all have these choices to be great but as I look around I once again realize that there are few people who choose to really focus on what they want and create a plan to build it. There are even fewer people who make the choices to see what they are grateful for first. I was studying some teachings recently which instructed that our frustrations come from our continued desires for what we often want.

While we are taught dreaming of higher goals is a great thing, we also know that when we do not have what we want, it is often, if not always, the source of our frustrations. Realizing that Desire is at the root of all frustrations I started to wonder how to build new goals, new ambitions and new results if thinking about them took me away from appreciating what I have now and focusing instead on what I wish I had.

That picture has become a lot clearer to me over the past couple of years with the Order of importance” I now realize that I want many things, goals and results in the new year to come but I am not concerned with what I do not have as much as I am with what I have already found. There are so many items I appreciate as I study 2014 and I simply want more of them in the coming year. They may take a different shape, they may be new ways or even new things which allow me to celebrate what I already appreciate but they should be based in appreciation from the life I am currently living.

There is nothing I would change throughout my past life because it has brought me to where I am. There are many things I would never repeat but I must recognize that all that has happened to me has created what I am today. Please do not misunderstand me because many of the things I have gone through this past year and years before I will never choose to do again but showing appreciation for my LIFE starts with me NOT forsaking what got me here. Now the next step is to decide where I am going and what I want to focus on today and forward.

I will share with you my 6 steps as I am learning them…

Review the year you just lived and think about your appreciations and write them down.

Make a second list of the things you would change and find the good that was within each item, no matter how tough it was.

Make a new list of your goals from these two lists above and make each one attach to your appreciations in life.

Make a list of ways that tie your new goals into giving to others and benefitting others in life.

Create a plan attached to each of the new goals you found worthy of your coming year.

Share that list with trusted advisors and ask their help to build a better future for yourself and the people around you.

If you follow these steps and build your goals it will allow you to look at the time you spent with someone this year and plan for more in the coming year. It will let you see the money you made and what you did with it and look for ways to expand it next year. It will let you see the reasons you did so many things that created results and decide how you want that to expand. By taking the time to reflect on what was really great and how you want more of it you are also preventing yourself from seeing the negative focus. You are instead creating your energy towards how to become better and not focused upon or propagating further “whats missing in your life”. Those negatives go away when we choose to make them go away but that starts with our energy to create and be greater in the next opportunity we all have which is now.

When you build your goals from your appreciations you will realize that they come true much quicker and easier because they are not built from frustrations. Appreciation compels us to excitement and energy where our focus on lack, loss and frustration steal our energies and leave us exhausted. Choose the space you want to start the new year in wisely and your goals will make a difference for you and those who have connected their lives to you.

I am working on my list and I am positive that my decisions with where and how I spend my time and life will create great results. They always have before and each year it gets better, my only hope from writing this to you was that I could share what I have found. I hope you have a great 2015 but I know at the end of the day that is totally up to each of us and what we choose to Focus on First!
